The Background
As an athlete, I loved throwing ‘mini hammers’ to improve my technique and specific strength. There was nothing quite like experiencing the ‘long pull’ and the sensation of an effortless throw from this training tool.
In my early years as a coach, I used multiple variations of the ‘mini hammer’ training tool, with varied success. While somewhat effective, these weren't suitable for younger athletes to safely experiment with.
From here, the concept of the ‘LongPull’ was born. Handmade on the Gold Coast, Australia, the LongPull has three key benefits:
Features
1. Improving technique and specific strength
Optimizing the length of the pull in the delivery phase of the throw, by being patient, is always desired. The LongPull aims to address that with its added lever length, giving you extra time to catch the discus (sometimes referred to as ‘on the shelf’) and maintaining a long throwing path.
Using a LongPull that is heavier can improve specific strength, while a lighter one, can be used to improve release speed.
2. Improve your ability to drill and practice safely.
Maintaining a solid ‘T’ shape during the start of a discus turn is essential, but is difficult to drill or practice with any speed, with a weight in hand. I found that athletes would tighten up their shoulders to hold the discus up (and to not let go), a habit that goes against the concept of creating ‘tension through relaxation’ during the turn.
The rope handle of the LongPull doubles as a retention strap, similar to a figure 8 strap used in the deadlift, and reduces the risk of letting the implement go during drills. With this design feature, athletes can keep their arms relaxed, while still feeling the weight of the implement during drills and practice turns.
3. Improve your warm-up
At events, particularly schools and Little Athletics meets, there is often no opportunity to throw or warm up with a competition weight implement. Combating this was a major design consideration. The LongPull gives the athlete the ability to drill their throws, with a real weight in the hand, without tightening up to hold a ball or discus. This tool can also enhance your dynamic warm-up, as it can be swung without the need to grip it tightly, and is suitable for all throwing disciplines.
Make Training Safer
The bright colors enhance the tool's safety, making it easier to see in the air, compared to dark-colored throwing implements**. The design features a core that ensures the rope maintains its form over time, providing a consistent feel for throwers.
The marine-grade rope, designed for outdoor use, is UV-stabilized and abrasion-resistant, increasing the product's lifespan over time. The rope design has a reduced impact on the turf surface compared to a ‘mini hammer’, making it more suitable for multi-purpose fields and keeping grounds staff on your side. It is also less likely to damage the netting should it hit the cage.
Heavier or lighter LongPulls can be used to achieve greater strength or speed benefits, depending on the desired outcome. We have a bigger one in the works too, subscribe to our mailing list for updates on future products.
While the LongPull will never replace throwing a competition-weight discus, it should be a tool in the bag of every serious discus thrower, young and old, at training and competitions.
*Swinging drills should always be completed at a safe distance from others or inside a throwing cage to ensure the safety of those around them.
**All throwing implements pose a risk to the athlete and bystanders. practice good safety measures and treat the LongPull like any other throwing implement.
